Chapter 14: The Cold Mask

The right manacle clicked open.

The sound was a clean, final snap of metal releasing. It echoed in the sudden silence that followed the soldier’s appearance in the doorway. Elinalise felt the weight fall away from her wrist. The chain pooled on the anvil with a dull clatter. Her arms were free.

The soldier in the doorway did not hesitate. He raised his voice, a sharp bark that cut through the quiet of the forge. “Sergeant! In here! I’ve got them!”

His shout was like a stone dropped into still water. The world outside the forge erupted into immediate, organized noise. Boots pounded the ground, converging on the single point. Orders were shouted back, crisp and efficient. The silhouette in the doorway was joined by two more, blocking out the grey daylight completely.

Lyra was already moving. She snatched up the brass hammer from the anvil, her face pale under the soot. She didn’t look at Elinalise. She lunged toward the doorway, not to attack but to try and slam the heavy wooden door shut against the men already there.

It was a futile gesture, born from panic more than any real plan. The lead soldier simply shoved his shoulder against the door before it could close. The force threw Lyra backward. She stumbled over her own crate seat and went down hard, her head cracking against the stone edge of the forge’s cold hearth. She lay still, the hammer skittering away across the floor.

Elinalise stood up from the stool. Her legs felt unsteady, like they weren’t entirely hers yet. The absence of the manacles was a strange, light feeling in her limbs that somehow made her feel more exposed, not less. She looked from Lyra’s motionless form to the soldiers now filing into the forge.

Three of them entered first, spears leveled. Their uniforms were the familiar dark green and grey of Grenville, stained with mud from the settlement lanes. Their faces were set in expressions of professional focus, devoid of any particular malice or curiosity. They were just doing a job. Behind them came a sergeant, an older man with a weathered face and a thin scar running from his temple to his jaw. His eyes swept the room, taking in the anvil, the tools, Lyra on the floor, and finally settling on Elinalise.

His gaze lingered on her wrists. On the pale bands of skin where the silver had been. On the two open manacles lying discarded on the steel anvil like dead insects.

“Check the girl,” he said, nodding toward Lyra without looking away from Elinalise.

One of the soldiers knelt beside Lyra, pressing fingers to her neck. “Alive, Sergeant. Knocked out cold.”

“Bind her. Conspiring to remove royal restraints is a capital offense.” The sergeant took a step closer to Elinalise. He carried no spear, just a short sword at his hip. His movements were economical, like he wasted no energy on anything unnecessary. “You. Turn around. Hands behind your back.”

Elinalise didn’t move immediately. Her mind was racing, but it felt slow and thick, clogged with the shock of the interruption happening at that exact second. A part of her wanted to laugh at the timing, at how perfectly cruel it was. She had gotten what she wanted. She was free of the manacles. And it meant absolutely nothing.

“Now,” the sergeant repeated. His voice didn’t rise. It just acquired a harder edge.

She turned slowly, presenting her back to him. The cool air of the forge brushed against the newly exposed skin of her wrists. She heard the rasp of leather as he drew a set of cords from his belt. They were not silver-lined or magical. They were just rough hemp ropes, meant for tying prisoners quickly and efficiently.

He grabbed her left wrist first, pulling it behind her back. His grip was firm and impersonal. He looped the cord around her wrist twice, pulled it tight enough to bite into her skin, then moved to the right wrist. He bound them together with a series of practiced knots. The rope chafed immediately, a coarse, ordinary discomfort that was somehow more insulting than the magical warmth of the manacles had been.

“Search her,” the sergeant ordered another soldier once the knots were secure.

Hands patted her down, rough and thorough. They found nothing of value on her. The clothes she wore were stolen, plain and worn thin. They found no hidden weapons, no seals, no coins. The soldier finished and stepped back.

“Nothing on her, Sergeant.”

The sergeant came around to face her again. He studied her face intently, then pulled a folded piece of parchment from inside his tunic. He glanced at it, then back at her. The parchment held a rough sketch, she assumed. A description.

“Princess Elinalise of the fallen Dragon Kingdom,” he said, his tone flat, reciting facts. “Escapee from lawful custody. Wanted for questioning regarding acts of magical insurrection and conspiracy against the occupying authority of House Grenville.” He refolded the parchment and tucked it away. “The description matches. So do the manacles. Mage Adrion will be pleased we recovered his work.”

The name sent a cold spike through her gut. So Adrion was involved in the search directly. Of course he was. The manacles were his creation. He would have felt the moment they were tampered with, maybe even the moment they came off.

“What about the blacksmith’s apprentice?” one of the soldiers asked, hauling Lyra upright by her arms. Her head lolled forward, a trickle of blood darkening her hairline.

“Bring her,” the sergeant said. “She’s evidence.” He gestured toward Elinalise with his chin. “Move her out to the wagon. Secure perimeter until Captain Varek arrives with the second squad.”

They marched her out of the forge into the muted daylight of Crow’s Perch. The settlement had gone quiet in a way that felt unnatural after its earlier chaotic noise. Doors were shut. Faces peered from behind shutters or from around corners of rough-built shacks, but no one came out into the open lane. The residents knew better than to draw attention when Grenville soldiers were conducting a sweep.

A covered wagon waited in the wider space near Marcus’s long hall. It was smaller than the transport wagon she’d escaped from in Blackwood Pass, but built along similar lines: sturdy wooden walls with a barred window on each side and a locked door at the back. Two soldiers stood guard beside it.

As they approached, Elinalise saw Marcus himself standing off to one side near the hall entrance. The outlaw leader watched the proceedings with his arms crossed over his broad chest, his expression unreadable. He made no move to interfere or speak. He just observed, calculating whatever profit or loss this incident meant for him.

They pushed her toward the back of the wagon. One of the guards there unlocked and lowered a narrow ramp.

“Up,” the sergeant commanded from behind her.

Elinalise climbed the ramp awkwardly with her hands bound behind her back, needing to hunch over to keep her balance on the inclined wood. The interior of the wagon was empty except for a thin layer of dirty straw on the floorboards. It smelled of old sweat and damp wood.

They didn’t shove her inside immediately. They held her at the top of the ramp while another soldier brought Lyra over and dumped her unceremoniously into the wagon first. Lyra landed with a soft thud in the straw and didn’t stir.

Then a hand pressed between Elinalise’s shoulder blades and pushed.

She stumbled forward into the dim space, falling to her knees beside Lyra’s still form. The door slammed shut behind her with a solid thud. A heavy bolt slid into place on the outside with a definitive scrape of metal on metal.

Light filtered in through the two barred windows on either side of the wagon, casting slatted shadows across the floor. Elinalise shifted until she could sit up, her back against one of the wooden walls. She tested her bonds again just out of habit even though she knew it was pointless now anyway after all that effort already wasted today basically making everything worse overall somehow if that was even possible anymore honestly given how low things had sunk recently generally speaking anyway.

She looked down at Lyra lying crumpled nearby still breathing steadily enough though unconscious obviously which was probably better than being awake right now considering what awaited them both likely some kind of interrogation followed by execution maybe public maybe private depending on what Grenville wanted to make an example of this time around historically they enjoyed public displays sometimes to discourage others from trying similar escapes or removing their magical jewelry apparently now included under that category too.

Outside she could hear movements around them mostly soldiers talking in low tones as they secured whatever perimeter they thought necessary here in middle this outlaw den where everyone probably hated them equally but feared them more which was how occupation worked generally speaking throughout history again nothing new really just another day for conquerors and conquered playing same roles forever probably until sun burned out eventually so depressing thought best left alone for now focus on immediate surroundings instead like texture wood grain under fingers smell old straw maybe something died here once before who knew really not important anyway.
